AN INTERVIEW WITH : ZANDRA RHODES

World renowned fashion designer Zandra Rhodes has recently released her handbag collection in Boudoir Boutique in Liverpool’s Cavern Walks. I was lucky enough to be invited to the event and have an interview set up with the wonderfully eccentric Zandra Rhodes herself! Zandra was one of the new wave British fashion designers, that put London on the fashion scene in the 1970’s – What an honour it was to interview her!

THE COLLECTION

The handbag collection is massively diverse and potentially can fit into anyones wardrobe and lifestyle. The collection varies from quirky evening clutches to colourful everyday holdalls. So there’s ideally something for everyone!

My favourite items from the collection has to be the clutch bags! There’s such a wide range to choose from. There’s statement clutches that can be used to liven up a relatively plain outfit and give it a point of interest, to the really elegant such as the Sea Shell clutches, which are so beautiful, the rich purple and the velvet black are perfect for special occasions! The gold hardware really dresses the bags up and compliments the rich and beautiful colours!

As you can tell by the vast amount of photo’s I took, I was completely blown away at how individually beautiful each bag was and how many there was to choose from! I walked around so many times as I would constantly notice something new and exciting as I did so!

THE INTERVIEW

I was so nervous yet excited to interview Zandra  she is such an interesting and inspiring women. Her designs have been worn by so many famous faces – Once again, thanks to Boudoir Boutique for this opportunity!

We know you’re here for the launch of your amazing handbag collection, what’s your favourite piece from the collection and why?

It’s hard to pick my faovurite! I love the big hold-all bags, as I tend to carry quite a lot of stuff around with me. Whenever I carry smaller bags, I always end up carrying a tote bag with the rest of my stuff in! I also love the make-up bags as I think they can make a real statement, however they’re only small. I particularly love the one with the lipsticks on

You’re on the the British new wave designers that put Britain on the map in the world of fashion, are there any designers that you really admire?

I don’t really have time to look at other people’s work if I’m honest. as I’m always busy doing my own things. However I loved the recent John Paul Gaultier exhibition with the talking and moving mannequins, I thought that was brilliant

You’re obviously inspired by a lot of art and textiles designs throughout the collection, there’s definitely a bit of Andy Warhol inspired pieces with the smaller make-up bags!

Yes! I love Andy Warhol! The makeup bags are all really pop art inspired. I love the designs of the make-up bags! You would know it was yours, as they’re really unique designs!

What would you say has been your favourite piece that you’ve designed? – Mines the ‘Field of Lilies’ dress from 1974!

This is a difficult one! I think each design is so individual to the time that I designed it, I couldn’t really pick a favourite. There’s too many to chose from!

You’ve designed for so many icons, such as Freddie Mercury, Madonna and even Princess Diana! What has been your favourite item that you’ve designed for a celebrity?

I loved the white one with all the pleats in that I designed for Freddie Mercury, it was a really beautiful piece! I loved designing items for him. I also loved the pieces that I designed for Princess Diana!

What was Freddie like? Have you had good relationships with the icons that you’ve designed for?

Freddie was really shy  actually! He was such a gentle man! I’m actually really close with Brian (from Queen) I see him quite a lot actually!

Are there any celebrities or musicians that you’d love to design something for?

I’d love to design for Lady Gaga! I’ve said this for a while now and I’d still love to meet her and sraw up some designs for her!

Since the lipstick make-up bag is one of your favourite statement pieces from the collection – What lipsticks do you love to wear?

I love an orange one from MAC, I think it’s called Morange? There one that I’m wearing now is an all time favourite too! However I can’t remember the name, it’s a cheaper one though! I love it because it doesn’t bleed off the lips and that happens a lot with red lipsticks!

Thank you for answering my questions Zandra! I love the collection and I will definitely be purchasing something as soon as I’m home

Special thanks to the Boudoir Boutique and of course, Zandra Rhodes!
Hope you enjoyed this post! See you on Sunday!

Love,
