It’s pretty much a given that university is going to be somewhat stressful. I mean, final year has already been the death of my social life (not that I really had one anyway) and it’s not even over yet. Although these times can be really stressful and it’s actually really difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel – The long, long painfully stressful tunnel might I add – I know I’m not the only one dealing with all of this stress and really feeling the weight and the pressure of it on top of everything that I do. So, I thought I would compile together a few little tips and positive thoughts, that have pretty much been helping me get through all of this over the past few months. So grab yourself a cuppa, or a beverage of your choice and let’s just have a little 5-minute break and attempt to forget about how stressed we actually are.
5 STRESS MANAGING TIPS
1. IT’S OKAY TO TAKE A BREAK
This is probably one of the biggest pieces of advice that I can possibly give. Making yourself feel guilty for taking a break, or just not taking a break at all is honestly the worst thing you can do. I find that cramming everything usually results in my marks not beeing as good as I’d hoped, simply because I’ve not given my brain a break and just put too much on my plate all at once basically. I’ve not crammed work since my first year, and I’ve seen such a positive result with my grades, the high marks are more constant and almost seem easier to achieve. Even if I’m spending a few hours out and about, or I’m watching an episode of a TV series or just taking a well-earned nap, there’s nothing wrong with it. Taking breaks is healthy and basically just allows your brain to switch off and zone out for a bit.
2. GET YOURSELF ORGANISED
Probably the one thing that I can truly pride myself upon is that I like to think I’m somewhat organised. I mean, I’ve pretty much got the next 2 months planned out day by day and although that sounds a little obsessive, it just allows me to see everything clearly and makes it easier for me to prioritise things. As well as that, I write myself daily and weekly to-do lists, just to have that little bit of self-assurance when I’m ticking things off of that list! I have a day-to-day diary from Shop Bando, which is genuinely the BEST thing I’ve ever bought, it pretty much goes everywhere with me!
3. THINGS WILL COME TOGETHER IN THE END
I constantly remind myself of this, everything is going to get finished at some point. Although this sounds a bit obvious because why wouldn’t I get it all done, because then I would obviously fail, however, when you’re sat looking at all your deadline and all the to-do’s on your list, sometimes it’s nice to think that this is all going to get done. It’s just basically making you think positively about what you’ve got to do. Instead of thinking “OMG I HAVE SO MUCH TO DO” just think about how good it;s going to feel when it all gets done and you begin crossing big tasks off your list!
4. DO WORK LITTLE, BUT OFTEN
This is somewhat similar to my point about taking breaks, however, it’s more of my ethic on how I get big tasks done, like giant theory essays that you hate with your every being. I personally have the attention span of a goldfish, my brain is constantly rolling and thinking about everything possible. Therefore, I like to do my workload in small snippets. I usually set myself a handful of tasks for one day, such as ‘writing 500 words on an essay, as well as editing some audio and writing up a blog post.’ I basically give myself a lot of jobs to complete, however in small doses, so although I’m only writing 500 words of that boring AF essay, at least I’m getting a percentage of it done, as well as completing some other weekly tasks. It may sound odd, but trust me. It works.
5. SNACKS… LOTS OF SNACKS!
Snacking is such a bad habit, I know. But I need that bowl of popcorn to get me through my work, like seriously. I basically use it as a reward. So if I write so much on an essay, it basically means that I can binge eat a couple of handfuls of popcorn. I’m basically treating myself like a pet dog, now that I’m actually writing about it. But it works, and althoguh I’m snacking on things that definitely aren’t the healthiest, at least I’m getting work done and at the minute, that’s my biggest pirotity!
I can’t help but express how important it is to not allow yourself to feel completely burdened by everything you’ve got to do. Although university is bloody hard and can be ridiculously stressful at times, the important thing to remember is that it’s all going to be worth it in the end. I mean, I definitely haven’t had the greatest university experience, but I probably haven’t had the worst either – I will most probably discuss all of this in a blog post once I’ve actually finished my degree. What i’m trying to say is that you’re not the only person in this horrible stressful position, so don’t block people out or moan that you’re stressed to them, because chances are, they’re just as stressed and you’re not helping by doing that. Keep calm and carry on, it will all be over and done with soon!
Good luck with your final year! You’re gonna be fine!
