A Guide To Adding A 70’s ‘Vibe’ To Your Wardrobe This Autumn

A Guide To Adding A 70’s ‘Vibe’ To Your Wardrobe This Autumn

Incorporating Retro elements into my wardrobe has something I’ve done since I was around 15 years old. Which is crazy, as that’s almost 10 years. When I was a teen, I was fascinated by all of the stories my grandparents would tell me about their lives in the 60’s & 70’s here in Liverpool and from then, I’ve been obsessed with those eras in fashion history.

To everyone, personal style is well, personal, so it’s important to take inspiration, but also allow yourself to add your own twist and ‘flare’ onto your looks. Over the years, I’ve really worked on pinpointing what looks good on me and what fits in with my personal style, and with all of that, I’ve really come to learn that my body type really suits the shapes & styles of the 70;s, which luckily for me, I was completely in love with anyways.

There’s so many standout elements to nailing 70’s style, and guess what, you don’t have to be fully committed to it, most of the time I mix 70’s style clothes with modern trends & fits. It’s all about finding the perfect balance. So, if you’re looking to add some elements of one of the grooviest era’s around, here’s some styles and trends I love from the era and that are super easy to add into your wardrobe!

Corduroy dreaming

Cord trousers (preferably in a flared or kick flare style) are a massive nod to the 70’s and also a great alternative to jeans. I find it so easy to get fed up of wearing jeans and end up feeling as though I’m wearing the same thing all the time, but cords just hit different, you know?

If you’re not into colour, you can get cords in black and even some amazing rust / tan colours, which will add another nod to the 70’s without having to invest too much. You can style them like you would with your day-to-day jeans, with a tee and some converse and just give off those Donna from ‘That’s So 70’s Show’ vibes without even trying.

Oversized Sunglasses

If you want to dip your toes into the era, without committing too much, a pair of oversized sunnies are the perfect way to do so. Oversized sunnies are chic, effortless and can give any outfit a 70’s vibe with very little effort.

I’d stay away from any sunglasses that look as though Kim K would wear them, do you know what I mean? Like, ‘those’ sunglasses? I usually go for sunglasses with an ombre / warm tone lense and that are either round or square in shape. I’d say start of with a cheap pair, maybe try and thrift a pair from your local charity shop or vintage store, get to know what shapes suit you best, then if you fall in love, you can invest in a higher quality pair. I have a pair of the Ray Ban Ja-Jo’s, which are perfect!

Experiment With Colour

One of the key aspects of my style that tends to get the most comments, is the amount of colour I wear, however, I’ve not always been like that. When I was younger and first started my blog, I wore a lot of black and just didn’t really feel like I had a sense of identity if I’m being completely honest. I started wearing more colour when I was about 18/19 years old and I haven’t felt more myself since. I think there’s a massive misconception that you have to be confident to wear a lot of colour and patterned garments, but I don’t think that’s entirely true. It’s the colour and the patterns that GIVE me the confidence.

Start of small, add in a hint of colour to an otherwise colourless look and go from there. Find out what colours suit you and what don’t. In terms of finding colours that fit within the 70’s colour palette, I’d go for oranges, yellows and greens as the main colours, however, remember it’s the 70’s and anything goes. Clash those colours, patterns and fabrics and just make sure you feel good in whatever you wear.

Knee High Boots

Come Autumn, I really do love a knee high boot. Although a knee high boot is a subtle nod to the swinging 60’s, styled with a midi dress and a faux fur coat / trench coat, you’ve got yourself a killer 70’s look. During Autumn, I still want to get some wear out of my mini dresses when I can, so I find that having a good pair of knee high boots perfect for doing so. I’ll either wear tights or cosy socks with them and style with a floaty mini dress, a hat and a coat if there’s a bit of a chill in the air.

Stay groovy x
