Getting My Home Ready For Christmas

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Although this year Christmas & the festive period are a lot different to what we’re used to and what we once deemed ‘normal’ however, one thing that hasn’t changed this year, is my excitement when it comes to decorating the house for Christmas and just making small home changes in general.

I think Winter is a great time to put some extra love into your home. Even if it’s re-organising your shelves or cleaning out your cupboards, I’m a firm believer that you don’t have to spend money to be house proud! I wanted to share some of the ways in which I get my home feeling festive & fresh, ready for Christmas, but also for a fresh start as the year rolls out (thank God!)

Oh Christmas Tree…

One of the biggest and most festive change to the home, has to be the Christmas tree. This year, we opted for a faux tree that we got second hand from my mum. The past few years, I’ve bought a real tree and absolutely loved it, however, this year I just didn’t want to deal with the mess or the disposal of the real tree. Whereas, have a faux tree means that we can keep it for years & years and I guess in some sense, it’s more sustainable in that sense.

Usually my tree is woodland themed and rather traditional, but this year we decided to let the tree truly reflect our personalities and the things that we love. We wanted it to be more eclectic and have such a variety of decorations, no matter what they look like. This theme made shopping for some new Christmas ornaments SO much fun! I found so hilarious ones from Typo & Paperchase, they have some really fun ones that add so much personality to a tree, from a Burrito to a Gum-ball machine, our tree is definitely something interesting to look at, to say the least! I also added some disco ball decorations, as this year we’ve done a subtle nod to a Disco-ho-ho theme, due to the fact our tree topper is actually a party light. Usually I’d hate anything tacky, however, this year I’m LOVING it!

Some of my favourites include…

Cosy Touches & Shiny New Things.

Your Christmas Tree lights alone will instantly make any room feel oh so cosy and festive, however, personally, I’m a sucker for a mug and all the hot drinks; Tea, hot chocolate, coffee, chai lattes, I love it all! And you want to know what I love even more, the mug that I put it in. My boyfriend jokes (well, at this point, I don’t think it’s a joke anymore) about how many mugs that I own and that I need to stop buying them. Realistically, that’s never going to happen. Can’t stop, won’t stop!

This year however, I decided to treat our home to a new kettle & toaster set from the Poodle & Blonde and Haden’s collaboration. I’ve had my eye on their collab for SO long, however, could never really justify it. But after the year we’ve all had, I thought why the hell not, my home deserves it (and so do I!) I think if there’s an excuse to treat ourselves and get excited about the little things in our home – Considering how much time we’ve spent in them this year – we should go for it! You’ll find me staring at my Kettle and Toaster for the foreseeable anyways.

Something that I do every December without fail, as a little festive treat, is buy new bedding. I used to always buy super festive bedding, however, I’ve gone off that idea as if I’m going to spend my money on something, I want it to have more use than just around the festive season. So, I usually opt for something subtly festive – It does usually end up being something star printed, but at least it’s *sort of* festive without being too much.

The set I opted for where an absolute bargain from Asda. Honestly, they have the best bedding for such affordable prices, this one is even brushed cotton, which is so cosy & warm.  It has grey & white stars printed on it, so it’s super versatile and would fit in with most home decor. It’s a subtle not to Christmas, but you can also use it at anytime throughout the year – You can thank me later!

Wanna Disc-ho-ho?

So, part of our theme for Christmas was Disco. I got my boyfriend a disco ball to hang in our living room for his birthday in November (something that we still need to do, oops!) However, after I got the mini disco ball tree decorations, I sort of wanted to go with that theme a little bit and rainbow tinsel was the answer.

Usually, I’d turn my nose up at tinsel, but honestly I just think it’s so fun and festive. I’m still not sure I’d ever put it on my tree – I don’t think I love it THAT much, just yet – but I’ve been wrapping it around the base of lamps & of course, I ever draped some across are beloved 50’s record player in our little music corner of our living room. I will now be nagging Vincent for the next few days until he puts him the disco ball. (I’d do it myself but I’m clumsy & short)

So there you have it, some little ways I’ve ‘jazzed’ up the house ready for the festive season. Nothing too drastic or too expensive, but just a few little changes to make me excited about spending Christmas at home.

Stay groovy x
